What’s included

What a bathroom
renovation includes.

A bathroom is the wettest room in the house and one of the smallest. The finishes are what you choose; the work behind them is what makes them last.

  1. Showers and tubs

A walk-in shower, a soaking tub or both, set out for the room you have.

    • Walk-in showers
    • Soaking tubs
    • Shower glass
    • Waterproofing behind the tile
  2. Vanities and storage

Cabinets built for a bathroom’s small footprint, so everything has a drawer.

    • Custom vanities and cabinets
    • Full-extension drawers
    • Stone counters
    • Mirrors and lighting
  3. Tile and heated floors

Tile set out so the cuts fall where you won’t notice them, over a floor that is warm underfoot.

    • Custom tile layouts
    • Heated tile floors
    • Wall and floor tile
  4. Plumbing, electrical and ventilation

The trades behind the walls, coordinated so the room is opened once.

    • Fixture rough-in and installation
    • Lighting and fan wiring
    • An exhaust fan vented outside

  3. Design before construction

We work through the design with you, with drawings to help you picture the work, before you approve it for construction.

We discuss the work and your budget at the start, then keep you informed as the project moves through each stage.

Good to know

Planning a bathroom:
what shapes the job.

The decisions that cost the most to reverse in a bathroom are the ones made behind the finishes.

Behind the tile

A bathroom renovation is mostly preparation. Old tile and board come off, the framing is checked for water damage, and the plumbing is set where the new fixtures need it. Only then does the room get new board, a waterproof membrane in the wet areas and tile.

An exhaust fan that vents outside matters as much as the membrane. Steam that stays in the room ends up in the paint, the grout and the framing.

Fixtures and layout

Keeping the toilet, sink and tub on their existing drains is the simplest job. Each fixture that moves adds plumbing under the floor, and in a bathroom over a finished ceiling that means opening the room below as well.

In a small bathroom, a walk-in shower with a glass panel usually makes the room feel larger than a tub with a curtain, because the floor reads as one surface from wall to wall.

Permits and electrical

Replacing fixtures and finishes in place is often exempt from a building permit; changing the plumbing or the structure is not something to assume. The building department can tell you from a description of the scope.

Heated floors, new lighting and a fan are electrical work, which goes through the Electrical Safety Authority separately from any building permit.
