Good to know

Planning a pavilion:
what shapes the job.

A pavilion is the largest structure most yards will hold, and it is treated as a building. Three things follow from that.

A roof changes the job

A solid roof carries snow and catches wind, so the posts, beams and footings are sized for those loads. That makes a pavilion heavier work than a pergola of the same footprint.

The roof shape sets the character. A hip roof slopes on all four sides and sits low and settled; a gable gives more height inside and an open end to face the view.

Placement

Where the pavilion stands decides what it is used for. Beside the house it becomes an outdoor dining room. At the far end of the yard it becomes somewhere to walk to.

Think about the path to it and what is underfoot when it rains. A pavilion that can only be reached across wet grass gets used less than one joined to the patio.

Permits

Roof design and placement can change the approval requirements, so confirm the proposed structure with your municipality before construction. Expect drawings with dimensions and the distance to each lot line to be part of that conversation.
