What’s included

What a patio project
includes.

A patio is the part of the yard you furnish. What surrounds it, the steps from the door, a wall to sit on, a fence for privacy, is usually planned with it.

  1. Patios

A level, paved place for a table or a seating group, sized to how you will use it.

    • Paver and stone patios
    • Excavation and a compacted base
    • Border bands
    • Steps from the door
  2. Porches

The front of the house, rebuilt to be used and not only walked across.

    • Porch construction
    • Stairs and railings
    • Cedar ceilings and posts
    • Stone cladding
  3. Fences, gates and screens

Privacy and enclosure, built to match what they stand beside.

    • Cedar privacy fences
    • Metal gates
    • Privacy screens
  4. Walls and lighting

The details that let a patio be used after dark.

    • Seat walls
    • Lights under the wall caps
    • Step lighting

We work through the design with you, with drawings to help you picture the work, before you approve it for construction.

  4. A conversation throughout

We discuss the work and your budget at the start, then keep you informed as the project moves through each stage.

Good to know

Planning a patio:
what shapes the job.

A patio looks simple from above. Most of what decides how it ages is underneath it and around it.

The base decides how it ages

Ontario soil freezes and thaws every winter, and anything paved on top of it moves unless the base lets water out. That is why more of the work in a patio goes into excavation and compaction than into laying the surface.

A firm edge holds the outer pavers in place. Without it the pattern slowly spreads and the joints open.

Shape and the way out of the house

Start from the door. How many steps down, where they land and which way you turn decide where the patio sits and how large it needs to be.

A border in a second colour, a seat wall along one side or a change of level can separate a dining area from a place to sit by a fire without building two patios.

Rules to check

Ground-level paving is rarely a building permit matter, but zoning, grading and drainage rules still apply, and a porch or any roofed structure is building work. Your municipal building department can confirm what your plan needs.
