A patio builder in Newmarket starts with the base

Under most of Newmarket lies Newmarket Till, deep glacial sand and gravel with no rock outcrops anywhere in the town. Excavation is digging, and the patio rests on soil that freezes each winter. So the base is built in layers of compacted crushed stone under a thin setting bed, with a firm edge, and the surface falls gently away from the house so meltwater leaves the foundation.

Patios on smaller Newmarket lots

On a Newmarket lot the patio is usually sized against the yard. The edge-of-town streets the Official Plan calls Contemporary Suburban, built after the 1990s, have rectangular and pie-shaped lots of small to moderate size, so a patio takes a real share of the yard. It has to leave room to pass the table, reach the gate and keep some lawn, so we mark it out on the grass with you before anything is dug. Start from the door: how many steps down, where they land and which way you turn. A border band in a second colour or a seat wall can separate a table from a place to sit without building two patios.
