What’s included

What interlocking
work includes.

New interlock in Newmarket is built from the excavation up: driveways, walkways and front entrances, patios, border bands and inlays, slab steps, and seat walls and curved benches with lights under the caps. Repair means re-levelling sunken areas, replacing cracked stones and resetting edges, and maintenance means cleaning, topping up joint sand and sealing.

Interlocking driveways in Newmarket

Front yards set the layout here. In the neighbourhoods built at Newmarket's edge after the 1990s, which the Official Plan calls Contemporary Suburban, lots are small to moderate rectangles and pie shapes with shallow to moderate front yards. The driveway, the walkway and any front step share that depth, so we draw them as one plan, with the border bands and the pattern tying them together. A driveway is the hardest-working interlock on the lot, so it gets the deepest base, and it also takes most of the front yard. Zoning can cap its width and the curb belongs to the Town of Newmarket, so both are confirmed before the plan is fixed.

The base under the stones: till, frost and drainage

Newmarket is built on deep glacial deposits, Newmarket Till, with no rock showing anywhere in town. Digging out for a base is straightforward, and the soil left underneath freezes and thaws every winter. The crushed stone base stands between that soil and the pavers: placed in layers, compacted, and graded so meltwater runs off and away from the house.

Re-levelling sunken interlock instead of replacing it

In Newmarket a low spot usually shows itself after the thaw, when ground that froze under the paving all winter settles back unevenly. Because the stones come out whole, the fix can stay local once we know why water collected there: a downspout led across the drive, an edge that let go. We suggest a full rebuild only when the whole surface has dropped.
