What’s included

What interlocking
work includes.

Interlock is a system: a base, an edge, the stones and the sand between them. New work builds all four; repair puts right whichever one has failed.

  1. Installation

New paving, from the excavation up.

    • Driveways
    • Walkways and front entrances
    • Patios
    • Border bands and inlays
  2. Steps and walls

The changes of level that turn paving into a place.

    • Slab steps
    • Seat walls and curved benches
    • Lighting under the wall caps
  3. Repair

Interlock can be lifted and re-laid, which is one of its advantages.

    • Re-levelling sunken or uneven areas
    • Replacing cracked or damaged stones
    • Resetting edges
  4. Maintenance

Periodic care to keep paving tight and clean.

    • Cleaning
    • Topping up joint sand
    • Sealing

Why Sonce

One contractor,
both sides of the door.

Most renovators stop at the back door and most landscapers start there. We plan and build on both sides of it.

  1. 15+ years in business

Sonce Homes brings more than 15 years in business to work inside the home and out in the yard.

  2. Licensed and WSIB insured

Sonce Homes is licensed and WSIB insured. Ask us about the credentials relevant to your project.

  3. Design before construction

We work through the design with you, with drawings to help you picture the work, before you approve it for construction.

  4. A conversation throughout

We discuss the work and your budget at the start, then keep you informed as the project moves through each stage.

Good to know

Planning interlock:
what shapes the job.

The stone is the part you choose. Three other things decide whether it stays where it was put.

Base, edge and joint

The base carries the load and drains the water. The edge stops the outer stones creeping outwards. The joint sand transfers load from one stone to the next, which is what the word interlocking refers to.

A driveway gets a deeper base than a walkway because of what drives on it. Thinning the base is the usual way a low price is reached, and it is the one saving that shows up later.

Colour, size and border

Large-format slabs read as calm and modern and suit patios. Smaller stones handle curves and vehicle loads better. A border band in a darker tone gives the paving a finished edge and ties it to steps and walls.

Look at samples outside, wet and dry, next to the brick or siding of the house. Stone that matches the house too closely tends to disappear against it.

Water and the street

Paving changes where rain goes. The surface is graded so water runs away from the house and stays on your own lot, and downspouts are led off the paving where possible.

At the street, the municipality owns the boulevard and the curb. Driveway width and curb changes are set by its by-laws, so they are confirmed before the layout is fixed.
